[MT_E and I] Re: Queston re MT4 -- can it run on a Mac?

Now that I have my new IMac running with a little more knowledge on my part
(read some books on how to convert to a Mac from a PC), I really (repeat
"really") like it -- my son was absolutely correct in making the switch.
As a retired IBM Researcher, I had raised him on PCs (he is now an MD), but
now he has converted me to the Mac -- never thought it would happen.

The Mac is based on Linux, which was it's origin in history. Wine was a
way to run Windows on Linux, which once Mac went to the Intel processor,
became possible to use to run "some" PC applications direct on a Mac without
an emulator, dual boot, or whatever. This interests me very much since the
only PC application I will be running is MT4, as I will have Mac
applications covering everything else I do, which is mostly email anyway.
But Wine was produced by CodeWeavers, which at least used to be at
www.codeweavers.com and is still reported to be at that site by Google.
However it just won't come up on the Internet, and I wonder if they are
still in business.

Does anyone here know if they still exist? I would sure like to check out
MT4 on Wine, as it would be a big help in my total conversion to Mac.
Since you say MT4 should run on Linux (server problem but not client
problem?), there is a real possibility that it would run under Wine -- if I
could find it, or get a copy of it (I always pay for software if it is for
sale -- I don't run bootleg software). I know I could run PC
programs under a VM virtual machine, or via a dual boot, but would prefer to
go totally on the Mac if possible, reserving running real PC code only if no
other choice.

For a Virtual Machine, Try Parallels (http://www.parallels.com/) for $50 or
VMWare's Fusion (http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/) for $80. The stuff
I read indicates that Fusion may be more efficient. At the time I was
looking at it, the only negative of Fusion was there were some utilities
missing (creating a VM fro an existing WIN partition was one, I believe),
but that was Version 1 of the product. I believe the current version is
version 3.

Good Luck.

Try www.winehq.com. That is the open source product that codeweavers
was based on. I have MetaTrader running under it on Linux - so it may
work for you.

Re: [MT_E and I] Re: Queston re MT4 -- can it run on a Mac?

Hi Charles,

Codewavers is still alive and kicking :-), I simply clicked on that link you
posted in your message and their web site came up in a sec.
They have a Crossover for Mac too. Now, I have been running MT4 on Linux
without problems, had to copy two dlls from Windows machine, that Wine
doesn't have, and few fonts also, and after that MT4 starts and runs as it
does under Windows. There is a small issue though, with setting parameters'
values for indicators, you can't do it from a dialog box for some reason,
the only way is to change them directly in the source code of an indicator
or EA.

I don't have any experience with MAC but if you say that it's based on Linux
than I guess you can go ahead and install MT4 using wine, or Crossover for
MAC which probably has more capabilities.

Cheers,
Ben

Re: [MT_E and I] Re: Queston re MT4 -- can it run on a Mac?

As far as changing parameters to EAs - click on it and hit your F2 button.
It should allow you to change it.

AFAIK, Mac isn't based on Linux but its core has similar ideological
underpinnings....

Re: [MT_E and I] Re: Queston re MT4 -- can it run on a Mac?

Charles,

MT works just about with Wine, the major features are OK, can connect to the
back server and once you copied one or two dlls and fonts you get a
reasonable end user experience. There is dark side though: some embedded
objects, like opening up an email or statement, sometimes changing parameter
values and meta editor rendering problem. You may live with those or can put
effort into these to investigate and find solutions. I ended up running
VMServer from vmware which is free of charge and am happy with that. There
might be mac version of that.

[MT_E and I] Re: Queston re MT4 -- can it run on a Mac?

Thanks to everyone who has been of such help to me in finding a way to run
MT4 on my new IMac. After studying the professional version of Wine from
CodeWeavers which they now call CrossOver, I have ordered it based on their
report that it does work, and have also ordered a CD to be sent to me with
it for a cost of $69.95 plus $10.00 for the CD, and the cost of shipping via
DHL. Their report showed:
MetaTrader 4<http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=2157>
Metaquotes Honorable Mention
reporting that it has been tested, and does work. It was also given a
Silver medal in advocacy rank, but don't know what all that means. Since
it can be returned with I think 60 days if it doesn't work in my
application, I will test it thoroughly, and report back here what I was able
to discover.

Since I am retired from IBM Research after having spent years in promoting
and supporting the IBM PC from it's earliest days (I even spent six years in
Paris getting the then new IBM PC announced in Europe), you may wonder why I
am now converting to a Mac. First of all, IBM sold it's PC business to
Lenovo in China, and is no longer in the Personal Computer business. Even
the operating systems developed by IBM -- PC Dos, and OS2 for the PC, are no
longer IBM products, with DOS turned over to Microsoft as MS-DOS, and OS2
being effectively abandoned long ago.

Certainly the early Macs were not very good, but with the adoption of the
Intel dual core processors for all new Macs, this machine suddenly came
alive -- in my eyes anyway. And then Microsoft hasn't done so well with PC
operating systems either, although while Vista is a space and performance
hog, with the latest PC hardware, I do like it, and have used it since first
availability. But the Mac performs much better, which is understandable
since Apple has designed both their hardware and software together with full
integration only possible when both are done by the same company. In the
PC world, Microsoft does the operating system and many hardware
manufacturers do the hardware, with obviously little coordination between
them.

When my son brought his MacBookPro with him on his latest visit on the
occasion of my 82nd birthday (he lives in Norfolk, VA and I live in San
Jose, CA), he was able to show me how much better his computer ran compared
to my Vista Ultimate running on the fastest PC I could buy not long
earlier. The wait times I endure compared with the apparently
instantaneous responses he was getting really turned me around. So when be
bought me an IMAC on the way to the airport for his return, I was really
turned on to the Mac, and decided to see if I could make it the workhorse of
my computing activities -- at least in my home, as my Mac is not a laptop.

I could run PC code on my Mac several ways, including dual boot
and emulation, but wanted to run my key PC programs unobtainable in true Mac
code, and certainly don't want to have to reboot every time I change from a
PC application to a Mac application -- which in my case looks like it will
be everything I do on true Mac applications (mostly email and word
processing), with only MT4 running PC code. So with help from members of
this group, I was able to discover Wine from CodeWeavers which allows me to
execute some PC code at least including as I show above MT4 as a true Mac
application not running under any PC operating system.

Incidentally my IMac was upgraded in the store it was bought from (Fry's
Electronics) to increase main memory from 2 GB to 4 GB. The IMac has all
the computer itself mounted in the back side of a 20 inch monitor, so the
only wires are to the keyboard (into which the mouse is plugged like it
should have been done on PCs), and in my case to an external 400 GB ESATA
hard drive for backups, and a 2nd monitor which is a 19" Viewsonic which I
like to use while trading Forex.

Re: [MT_E and I] Re: Queston re MT4 -- can it run on a Mac? PC-DOS rules..............

I remember the old days when anyone who used a mouse was considered less than a man because they were not manly enough to run DOS based machines. I caved in after DOS 6.0 expolited the mouse with their hokey shells. Apple was not the only sissy O/S as Windows 3.1 was rearing its' ugly head back then too.

Good post Charles. Apple does seem to have a lot going for it although I won't consider buying one until they replace the slacker in their Apple versus MS commercials with someone dressed for success....................................

This one gave me a good laugh -- thanks for it. And I assume the "slacker"
is none other than Steve "the" Jobs. And I don't like negative advs
either,
but Steve-o isn't the creative one at Apple, and never was -- just an
incredible
salesman. I have to give the creative ones great applause, and even also
to
their managers who had the good sense to just get out of their way and let
then do what they wanted -- and never what the marketing people wanted.

I can't tell you the many "mouse" conversations we had inside IBM during
those years. But thankfully the "bad" ones lost.
